Malanjkhand a municipal class III town in Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh encompasses an area of 80.45 sq km and has a population of 32,296 as per 2001 census. This small town has the biggest open copper mines in Asia. Malanjkhand has a historical significance from pre-historic time. Maljkhand derived its name from a treasure, which remained buried earth and which attracted many explores in the past. It is also believed that a giant demon, it appeared, was guarding a fabulous treasure buried at Malanjkhand. Bhima dragged the demon out of the tunnel and chopped him into seven pieces. From this came the name Molanj (copper) and khand (Piece).
However, the name Malanjkhand was derived from the “Malanjkhand Copper Project” established on 27th May 1995 and got the status of Municipal Council in June 1995
The members of the Nagar palika are elected representatives for a term of five years. The town is divided into wards according to its population, and representatives are elected from each ward. The members elect a president among themselves to preside over and conduct meetings. A chief officer, along with officers like an engineer, sanitary inspector, health officer and education officer who come from the state public service are appointed by the state government to control the administrative affairs of the Nagar palika.
